Help & Advice

When a car is looked after, there is a lower chance of it being involved in accidents.

If you want to feel rest assured by knowing that your vehicle will pose no danger to your loved ones, here are a couple of tips as provided by Gilnahirk Tyres and Exhausts. By paying close attention to them, your vehicle will remain very safe.

Tyre pressure

Tyre pressure should be checked on a regular basis.

When tyres are flat, this increases the amount of fuel it uses and, overall, it reduces their functionality. By following the recommendations as set down by the manufacturer in regards to the make and model of your vehicle, you will be able to find out what its tyre pressure should be. If you’re unsure on what to do, we can show you in less than a quarter of an hour. We can also answer any queries regarding your tyres courtesy of our twenty five years’ experience.

Tyre tread

Tyre tread must be checked frequently.

Not only is it a legal requirement but tyres that have poor quality tread can affect your safety and increase fuel consumption. We will advise you about the condition of your tyres. If you believe that they should be replaced because its tread is affected, we will only sell tyres if they are actually required. Our customers are never sold new tyres if they aren’t needed. When we agree that tyres should be replaced, we will do so to the highest possible quality where only competitive prices are charged.

Oil level

It is also important that a vehicle’s oil levels are checked.

When the right oil is used which abides by what a manufacturer specifies, an engine will remain healthy. Gilnahirk Tyres and Exhausts recommend that oil levels are checked with a dipstick at least once a month. A vehicle’s oil and filter should be replaced twice a year or when it has driven 600 miles since it was last changed.

tell-tale signs

You should also look out for tell-tale signs which indicate that there is an issue.

Prominent signs include oil having bubbles/foam or there is an overpowering smell of fuel. If you don’t know how to check oil levels, we can show you how. When you’re given free advice from our experienced mechanics, you’ll know what to look out for in the future. As well as oil levels, you should also check wash wipe levels, radiator levels and brake fluid levels. Again, we can give advice free of charge regarding this.

Vehicle lights

Vehicle lights must also be checked.

Vehicle lights must also be checked. Along with a bottle of oil for replenishing an engine, you must have spare bulbs in your boot. Therefore, when your lights suddenly stop working whilst driving at night, broken lights can be replaced. When your vehicle is serviced by our professional team, you can drive around with the peace of mind that any prominent or underlying issues have been dealt with.

Are you due to go on a long trip?

If so, here’s what you should check:

  • Find out if oil pressure is dangerously low
  • Check the pressure of your tyres as well as the spare tyre
  • Do all of your lights work? They should be tested, including fog light capability
  • Do your window wipers work? Check them whilst turned on at full speed
  • Wash wiper fluid levels
  • Are radiator levels very low? If so, top them up
  • Clean a vehicle inside and out
